Executive Order on Medical Accreditation: Winners & Losers Edition

This week, the president issued an executive order entitled “Reforming Accreditation to Strengthen Higher Education.” The order asserts that accrediting agencies have made “the adoption of unlawfully discriminatory practices a formal standard of accreditation” by including standards related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

The order specifically targets both the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME; responsible for accrediting MD-granting medical schools) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME; responsible for accrediting residency and fellowship programs) and could dramatically change medical training in the United States.

This is a big deal – and the intent, implications, and impact of this order all deserve some scrutiny.

So you know what that means.

It’s time to break it down, Winners & Losers™️ style.
