Developing and Advocating for Sustainable Business Models in Academic Medicine

As doctors, we have good jobs.

I mean that. We get to do cool things and think about cool problems, and we get to come alongside patients and their families and help many of them live longer or better.

The trick is keeping our jobs good.

Among the threats to doing that are the business pressures: pressures to do more, or bill more, or churn out enough wRVUs satisfy various bean-counters and bosses.

In this business-focused environment, how can doctors advocate for the things they need in a way that’s sustainable?

I got to try to answer this questions to a group of physicians in my specialty, but I think the big points apply more broadly.
