Last week, Michael Bloomberg donated $1 billion to Johns Hopkins University to allow their medical school to become (mostly) tuition-free. This adds another elite institution to the growing list of medical schools that are tuition free for all (or most) of their students.
The announcement generated the usual fawning media headlines (while obscuring many of the relevant details in the copy) and inspired innumerable social media hot takes on philanthropy, socioeconomic diversity in medicine, and the role of educational debt in specialty selection – among other things.
So you know what that means.
