Match Day 2026: Winners & Losers Edition

Well, another Match Day is in the books… so you already know what time it is.

Yup, that’s right.

It’s time to break it down, Winners & Losers™️ style.

(Running time 32:23)

Some teasers…

Surgical subspecialties remain MD-dominated, while IMGs continue to disproportionately fill positions in pathology and primary care specialties. Meanwhile, DOs filled over 30% of available positions in PM&R and emergency medicine.

While other specialties have seen a shock-and-recovery pattern to their unfilled positions, the number of unfilled positions in family medicine continues to march steadily upward each year.

Some specialties have grown more rapidly than others. While family medicine and emergency medicine have grown faster than applicant interest, psychiatry and neurology have become relatively more popular even in the face of rapid expansion.

Again this year, there were a grand total of ZERO unfilled anesthesiology positions.

Match rates were up this year. (Well… up for everyone except non-U.S. citizen IMGs, that is.)

What would happen if internists were paid like dermatologists? Overnight, the specialty would become much more competitive.

The number of states offering IMGs alternative pathways to licensure without residency training continues to grow.

The proportion of U.S. medical students attending DO-granting medical schools continues to grow.

Since 2021, the number of U.S. citizen IMGs has been in decline, while the number of DO Match applicants continues to increase.

The Residency Application AI Bot Wars are coming. Hope we’re ready.
